Student Spotlight: Kyle Merkle, 4th Grade

Fourth grader, Kyle Merkle, knows something about math that most of us don’t: math is fun. Participating in Mary of Nazareth’s Math Olympiad Program has allowed Kyle to further explore and develop his interest in mathematics. Scoring in the top two percent of competitors nationally, Kyle says that Math Olympiads is, “a fun time for him to hang out with his friends and do math problems as a team.” The Math Olympiad Program gives students the opportunity to participate in problem solving contests with the goal of fostering a love of math.

Students learn and practice math concepts at weekly meetings through game based activities, and participate in five contests throughout the year. The Program enables students to try advanced math at their own pace. Kyle shares with excitement that Math Olympiads is all about exploring your own potential, “it’s just to see how well you do … it’s a fun experience to do hard math problems.” According to their website, nearly 170,000 students from 6,000 teams worldwide participated in Math Olympiads last year. When asked how he felt knowing he had scored in the top two percent nationally, Kyle shares that, “Seeing the smile on my mother’s face really energized me to keep doing Math Olympiads next year.” Kyle credits club moderator and parent volunteer, Mrs. Amanda Skelton, for making Math Olympiads fun, and introducing him to new math concepts.

Congratulations, Kyle! Keep up the great work!
