Mary of Nazareth Students Who Serve: Hackett Rascher and Kylie Ly

Hackett Rascher, Our Lady of the Visitation Parish, 8th Grade

Eighth grade student, Hackett Rascher spent every Wednesday and Friday this past June and July working as a summer volunteer at the Montgomery County Public Library in Potomac. Hackett completed approximately 40 hours of service helping young library patrons sign up for summer reading and track their progress, assisting with summer reading events, helping patrons put books on hold or find books, cataloging the children's library, and sorting through the many donated books that are given to our libraries.

Hackett made a difference by giving library staff the extra help they need and serving the community. He enjoyed interacting with the many different people that come to our libraries. According to Hackett, one of the highlights of his service experience was, “hearing the types of questions people ask when they need help and the range of interests people have.” Hackett learned that his education at Mary of Nazareth School really pays off when a patron was looking for a book about the current Prime Minister of Canada but didn't know his name...Hackett recalled Justin Trudeau from Social Studies class!

Kylie Ly, Mother Seton Parish, 8th Grade

For the past two years, beginning at the young age of eleven, current eighth grade student, Kylie Ly, has been volunteering at Sunrise Senior Living in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Kylie holds a musical show every second Saturday of the month for two hours, sharing her God-given talents with the elderly by singing and playing the piano.

Kylie shares of her experience, “The elderly expressed to me how grateful and appreciative they are that, at such young age, I am able to deliver classic songs that bring back memories. I did not realize that my passion for playing piano and singing can bring so much joy to people, especially the elderly. I have learned that spending even a small amount of time listening to the elderly sharing their life experiences gives them much happiness, which I can see in their eyes!”

Kylie states that her service work has lead her to a full understanding of the meaning behind commitment and dedication. In order to prepare for and deliver a good show, she spends no less than ten hours a week practicing her programs, script, choice of songs, and piano pieces. Kylie is especially thankful to God for this opportunity, which she says, “gives her a different perspective in life, which strengthens my relationship with my family, especially with my grandparents.”

Mary of Nazareth School recognizes two students each month that enrich their communities through service, social concern, and good citizenship. This month's spotlight is on eighth grade students, Hackett Rascher and Kylie Ly.
